Osteomyelitis Overview

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone, usually caused by bacteria. It can affect any bone in the body but commonly involves the long bones of children and adults, spine, and pelvis. If untreated, it can lead to bone destruction, chronic infection, and impaired function.

Causes

  • Bacterial infection spreading through the bloodstream

  • Direct infection from open fractures or surgery

  • Infections in nearby tissues spreading to the bone

  • Chronic conditions such as diabetes or poor immunity

Symptoms

  • Severe localized bone pain

  • Swelling, redness, and warmth over the affected area

  • Fever and general malaise

  • Limited movement of nearby joints

  • In chronic cases: draining sinuses or pus from the skin

Treatment

Non-Surgical

  • Intravenous antibiotics (often for several weeks)

  • Oral antibiotics after IV course

  • Pain management and rest

Surgical

  • Debridement – removal of infected bone and tissue

  • Stabilization of bone if damaged

  • Bone grafting or reconstruction in severe cases

Treatment choice depends on infection severity, bone involvement, and patient health. Early intervention improves outcomes.
