Deformity Correction Overview

Deformity Correction is a surgical or non-surgical treatment approach used to realign bones, joints, or limbs that have developed abnormal shape, length, or alignment. Deformities may occur due to birth defects, trauma, infection, arthritis, or improper healing of fractures.

Correcting these deformities helps restore normal movement, balance, and joint function, while preventing future arthritis and disability.

Causes of Bone & Limb Deformities

Deformities can arise from:

  • Congenital conditions (present at birth)

  • Malunited fractures (improper healing after injury)

  • Growth plate injuries in children

  • Arthritis & joint damage

  • Infections (osteomyelitis)

  • Neuromuscular disorders

  • Metabolic bone diseases

Common Types of Deformities

  • Angular deformities (bow legs, knock knees)

  • Rotational deformities (inward or outward twisting of bones)

  • Limb length discrepancies

  • Post-traumatic deformities

  • Hip or knee deformities due to arthritis

  • Foot & ankle deformities

Treatment Options

1. Non-Surgical Treatment

In mild deformities or in children:

  • Bracing

  • Physiotherapy

  • Shoe inserts or orthotics

  • Growth-modulating techniques (guided growth)

2. Surgical Treatment

Surgery is recommended when deformity causes pain, disability, or progressive worsening.

a. Osteotomy (Bone Realignment Surgery)

The surgeon cuts and repositions the bone to correct alignment.

Common for:

  • Bow legs

  • Knock knees

  • Post-traumatic deformity

  • Hip and knee arthritis deformities

b. External Fixation (Ilizarov / Hexapod Frame)

A frame is applied outside the limb to gradually correct deformity, lengthen bone, or treat complex problems.

c. Internal Fixation (Plates, Screws, Nails)

Used for precise correction and stabilization of the bone.

d. Deformity Correction During Joint Replacement

In severe arthritis or AVN, deformities around the hip or knee are corrected during Total Hip or Total Knee Replacement for better alignment and function.
